What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is a system that takes a goal, decides which steps to take and calls tools or APIs to carry them out, checking its own results as it goes. A chatbot talks, an automation follows a fixed path, and an agent picks its own path.

Data checked:

TL;DR verdict

If it can't choose between two different actions, it is an automation wearing the word "agent". The test is whether the system decides, not whether a language model is involved.

Which we'd pick, scenario by scenario

  • Support triage

A ticket arrives. The agent reads it, checks the order in your system, decides whether it is a refund, a delivery question or a bug, and either answers or routes it. Nobody ever wrote the routing rule down; the agent infers it from the ticket and the order record.

  • Lead qualification

A form comes in. The agent enriches the company data, scores fit against your criteria and books a meeting or sends a polite no. When the enrichment lookup fails, it tries a second source instead of dropping the lead.

  • Reporting

Every Monday the agent pulls numbers from ads, CRM and invoicing, notices which ones moved and writes the summary about those. A scheduled report would send the same twelve charts whether or not anything changed.

  • When an agent is the wrong choice

Moving a paid order from a shop into an accounting system is one path with no decisions in it. An agent would add cost, latency and room to get creative with your invoices. Use a plain automation.

In 2026 the word "agent" got stretched until it stopped carrying information. We have been shown a cron job with an API key and told it was an agent, and we have seen autonomous multi-step systems described as "just some automation" by the teams that built them. Neither description helps a buyer.

We draw the line at decision-making. If the system can reach the same goal by more than one route and chooses between them, it is an agent, and it needs what agents need: logs of what it decided, limits on what it can touch and a human approval step wherever a mistake costs money. If it runs one path every time, it is an automation and needs none of that overhead. Most projects that come to us asking for agents turn out to need two automations and one agent. That system is cheaper and more reliable, and we say so before quoting. See what we build on the AI agents page, or read the buyer's view in what an AI agency actually does.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers in a chat window. An agent calls your CRM, calendar or email to finish a task, sometimes with no conversation at all. Plenty of production systems are both: a chat interface at the front and an agent doing the work behind it.

Is an AI agent the same as automation?

No. An automation runs a path you defined, while an agent picks the path at runtime. That flexibility pays off when cases vary and is pure overhead when they don't, which is why we still build far more automations than agents.

Can an AI agent work without a human checking it?

For low-stakes steps, yes. For anything that spends money, sends a contract or writes to a customer record, we put an approval step in front of it. The agent prepares the action, a person confirms it, and the whole run is logged.

What does an AI agent cost to run?

The cost follows how often it runs and how much it reads each time, because model APIs bill per token. A triage agent handling a few hundred tickets a month is inexpensive; one that re-reads a large knowledge base on every run is not. We work that out in the free audit.

Do I need an agent or would automation do?

Ask whether the right next step is ever in doubt. If a person would need to look at the record and think before deciding, an agent earns its cost. If they would follow the same rule every time, an automation is faster, cheaper and easier to debug.
